Machine Embroidery Basics

Two day to five day workshop for students at all skill levels. Zigzag sewing machine needed.

In this class students explore the different potentials of embroidery using a basic sewing machine. Students sample a variety of techniques including line drawing, filled shading, ways of creating texture, using dissolvable fabric (optional), collaging, and couching. Design and aesthetics are informally discussed, as well as ideas for finishing and displaying work. Computerized sewing machine-controlled patterns will not be covered.

Longer description:
Students are given a number of short assignments designed to help them explore different options in machine embroidery. Students use cotton canvas as a base, but other materials are incorporated as well. In some exercises students work directly with thread and fabric. Other exercises begin with quick sketches or collages made from design materials brought from home. These design materials will vary from student to student, and might include such things as colored pencils, paint, colored paper, fabric, and magazine pictures. Techniques that are covered include line drawing; shading with saturated layers of thread; creating different textures with the way the thread is applied; edging in various styles; combining stitching with layers of fabrics, papers etc.; and couching other threads, ribbons, fabrics and yarns. Finishing and displaying work will be discussed.

Students should bring their own machines. The machine should be in good working order and should be able to lower its feed dogs. It also needs a darning or a free style embroidery foot.
