A smooth gradation can be made by hatching one color into another using two or more colors. This example uses sixteen different colors of thread.

Many different textures and effects can be made by techniques such as couching and changing the relationship of the tension of the top and bobbin thread.

Many effects can be made using different styles of stitching and different amounts of fabric showing in the final piece.

Design considerations are important. This example shows a figure/ground reversal using a dark and light spiral, and a general gradation in each spiral from a darker value at the edge to a lighter one in the center. The piece was begun with a base of collaged fabrics that become part of the final design.

This example shows the principle of 'lost and found contours'. The stitching is heavy and basically in one direction only.
